It was derived from the occupation of tinsmithing, which many Travellers once practiced; specifically, from the sound of hammer striking metal. Over the years, "tinker" became a pejorative label and is seldom used publicly today. WebTinkers, or Irish mares, are spotted horses that are also called gypsy draft horses. They descended from the medieval gypsy workhorses. A distinctive feature of the breed is long manes and tails, thick hair on the legs. Outwardly, mares resemble Dutch Frisians, but their piebald color betrays their nomadic past.
