WebbI found online that slugs are NOT easy to drown, so I wonder if I had been "drowning" the same slugs night after night. They now go into the garden waste container. Having said all that (and having had a laugh at myself) my plants have begun to grow again, so perhaps it was only a couple of very hungry slugs doing the damage.
